That done, I don’t leave the florist empty handed. I buy my woman three dozen of white daisies, her second favorite flower. When I pull into the driveway, I see Fancy’s car.
When I open the door, I trip over something laid out in the doorway. I don’t fall, but the only thing that kept my balance was my hand on the wall. I start taking my shoes off when I walk in because Fancy has a thing about dirty floors. When I look down, I drop the flowers that are in one hand. They land in a large pool of blood. I drop to my knees while simultaneously fumbling for my phone in my coat pocket.
“Fancy. Can you hear me?” I yell.
“Baby?” It’s like a question, but it’s faint.
“What? Who did this to you?” I ask, finally dialing 911.
“The baby?” I am more confused than ever. I know that Eliza is staying with my mom tonight.
“Eliza is fine, Fancy.”
“911. What is your emergency.”
“My fiancé has been hurt. I think she has been stabbed. There is blood everywhere, but I can’t tell where it is coming from.”
“What is your address, Sir.” I rattle off the address. “Help is on the way.” I can already hear the sirens.
“Oh good.” Fancy says as she starts to drift off again. I don’t know what has happened here, so I don’t know if she has a concussion or not. But her eyes pop back open a few seconds later. “No. The baby. Our baby.” For the first time, I notice she is clutching her lower belly.
“Our baby?” I say in awe. She tries to nod, but for some reason it isn’t happening. So, I do the only thing I can think of to calm her. I lie. “The baby is fine.” I say as I smooth her hair away from her face and I can hear the ambulance pulling up behind me.
“Sir move out of the way. We will take care of your fiancée.”
“I think she is pregnant. She just tried to tell me, but I am not sure if it’s true.”
“I will have the hospital check.”
They take a piece of my world away in an ambulance, while I am questioned for this. The cops found a knife near where she was laying.
“So, the restaurant confirmed your alibi. Do you have a home security footage I could access?” Detective Jensen asks.
“Of course.” I say as I access the app on my phone.
“When can I see my fiancée?” I ask.
“Soon.” He says as he watches the doorbell video from today. “Who is this woman?” He asks, pointing the phone back to me.
“My daughter’s mother, Katya Volkov.”
“She stays roughly ten minutes and then leaves in a rush. A few minutes later, you come in.
“I don’t know why she would do this.”
“Jealousy is usually the most common reason.”
“She was a one-night stand, ten years ago. I guess I don’t get it.”
“She was the only person who came here today, unless Ms. Smith did this to herself.”
“She would never.” I say.
“She wasn’t depressed? Have any health problems?”
“What? No. Why are you asking this.”
“Just doing my job, son.” Detective Jensen is probably sixty years old, so I let that slide.
“It had to be Katya.” I say.
“Daddy!” I turn in time to catch Eliza.
“Hey baby girl. Where are your grandma’s?”
“They are coming. They had to park in the street.”
“What’s going on? Where’s Fancy?”
“She is at the hospital. If we are done here detective, that’s where we’ll be.” I ask, looking over at the detective.
“You go ahead. I’ll find you if I have more questions.”
I nod and walk out the front door. In the driveway, I run into our mothers.
“What’s going on, dear?” My mom asks.
“It’s Fancy. She has been attacked. They have taken her to Morton.
“Oh goodness. I am coming with you.” Pat, Fancy’s mother says, before crying. I still can’t believe both of our mothers are named Patricia.
“Of course. Ma, she was making dinner can you take care of it then come up to the hospital?”
“Absolutely. See you soon.” She says going inside. I put Eliza in the backseat. She no longer needs a booster seat, so she buckles her seatbelt while I get in. Buckling mine, I peel out of the driveway and to the hospital. When we get there, Fancy is in surgery.
The doctor comes out after about an hour.
“Family of Fancy Smith?” He says.
“Here. I am her fiancé and this is her mother.”
“I’m Doctor Graves. We’ve managed to stop the bleeding. She lost a lot of blood, but she got here in time. She will be receiving blood for a few more hours. Her baby is healthy. We are estimating three weeks old.”
She is having my baby. I breathe a sigh of relief that she’s going to be okay.
By the time she has gone into recovery, my mother is there too.
“Clark. Eliza. Oh God, I am so happy to see you.” I look at the machines attached to her. This hasn’t really sunk in yet.
Eliza walks to the edge of the bed and gently hugs Fancy. They are both crying.
“I thought I was never going to see you again, Fancy. What happened?” Eliza asks.
“Just a little accident. I’m fine now. Hi Mama, Patty.” While they fuss over her, I just can’t get over how close I came to losing her.
“We’ll take Eliza with us.” My mom says.
“Thanks.” I say pulling her to the side. “Ma. Don’t let Katya anywhere near my baby. The cops think she did this to Fancy. I am sure they are going to talk to her.”
“Oh my God. I know this doesn’t help, but I have always hated that bitch.”
“You didn’t really hide it, Ma.” I say, smiling for the first time in hours.
“I know. We’ll go.” She goes and places a kiss on Fancy’s cheek.
“Bye Patty. Thanks for coming.”
“You are family, dear. Griff will stop by later.”
“Reba and Mac too.” Her mother says.
“I don’t want to leave you, Fancy. I love you. Don’t make me go.” Eliza is sobbing now, and it breaks my heart.
“Aww, baby. I love you too. I will be home tomorrow. I promise. Go with Nana and Grams.”
“Ok. Fancy Mama. Come home tomorrow.”
They hug and then they leave, leaving Fancy and me alone.
I have hung back from her and I hate it.
I move close to the edge of the bed and sit on the opposite side of her wires.
“Baby.” I say before burying my head in her chest.
“I am alright, babe. I promise.” She is the one who is injured, and she is comforting me.
“I thought I lost you.” I say. I can feel the tears forming, but I don’t let them fall. I don’t cry. Only this woman can bring that out in me.
“You didn't. I am still right here.”
“I can’t bear the thought of you not being near me.”
“I love you more than you could possibly understand.”
I love you too. You are my everything. You are having my baby.”
“They said the little nugget was ok. Are you happy about this?”
“Of course. I have been trying to breed you each time I have been inside of you. When you are feeling better, we will celebrate.”
“Mm, that sounds nice. Oh wait. Tell me they got her?”
“Who? Katya?”
“Yes. That bitch is crazy.”
“The cops are going to question her.” I reply.
“Good. She needs help.”
“To say the least.”
“Let’s get married on Saturday. I don’t want anything fancy. I just want to be your wife.”
“I want everything that is Fancy.” I say. This causes her to laugh.
“Ow. Fuck that hurt.”
“I am sorry, baby. Let’s get married on Saturday.”
Epilogue
Fancy
One Year Late
r
My besties were not happy that I didn’t call them when I was in the hospital. They all have men now. Men who love them more than anything. Which is fantastic.
I think that is natural and normal that friends drift apart over the years. Do I like it? No, I don’t.
But I do everything I can to keep us together at least once a month. Well, except poor Stella. I say poor, because I am not jealous even a little bit. She is based in Italy now. Clark and I are going over to her sweet villa again soon. Our baby, Lauren Sue, is four months old. She is a chubby and happy baby, thankfully. I am still Clark’s PA, but I work exclusively from home. He also works from home unless he needs to go to the office for a meeting.
Lanie has a baby a few weeks older than Lauren. Christopher is adorable as well and they nap a lot together right now. Lanie and I are already playing matchmakers though. I went to check on them and they were holding hands. I think it’s fate, because they were swaddled yet they managed to escape to hold hands. Of course, I took a picture and uploaded it to my social media. It went viral. It was the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
Eliza is eleven going on thirty. She calls me Mama Fancy. I am freaking loving that. Speaking of her mama, Katya has been in and out of rehab since the day she stabbed me. She confessed before the cops even asked her a question. She has anorexia on top of being bipolar. She is getting the help she needs, and Clark petitioned the court for full custody, which was granted. Despite what happened, I wouldn’t be upset if Eliza wanted to be with her again when she is better. After all, she is still her mother. When Clark heard that he was drugged, he decided that it all made sense. I left it at that though.
I don’t think that will be the case though. She was teaching Eliza bad habits about food not that I am teaching good ones, but since I had Lauren I have been working with a nutritionist and hitting the gym. I haven’t lost a lot of weight, but then again, my health and my life are not a race. Besides, with the way Clark worships my body, I don’t want to change it too much. I’ll take healthy over skinny any day.
Since I started going to the gym, I’ve realized that men and women, fat and skinny all have body issued. Body shaming comes in many forms and I have strived to better myself in that aspect. I’ve learned that telling a skinny woman she needs to eat a cheeseburger is the same thing as telling a fat woman she needs to workout. The world would be a better place if everyone minded their own damn business. What you look like doesn’t define who you are.
Since Lauren is napping and Eliza is in school, I take the opportunity to please my husband. Going into his office, I see that he is sitting behind his massive oak desk. He is on the phone, talking about a huge salary for one his basketball players.
I drop to my knees before him and release his cock from his pants. I pull the tip into my mouth and I vaguely hear him hang up the phone.
“Fuck baby.” His hands tangle in my hair.
Even when I am on my knees for this man, he still manages to treat me like a fucking queen. His queen. I am excited to see the where the next fifty years takes us.
Epilogue
Clark
Twenty-two years and eight kids later, my wife is still my fucking queen. Eliza is thirty-two and our youngest, Landon is four. Having a baby at forty was too much for Fancy, so he is our last.
Today marks the day I give my little Lauren to Wyatt and Lanie’s son, Christopher. Lauren looks just her mother. They have been inseparable since the day Lauren was born, about a month after Christopher. There sweet friendship turned into love when they were fifteen. This day has been long in the making.
Eliza has been married for about ten years to a man who is ten years older than her. That’s another story tough. They have a couple of kids, making me a Pop-Pop. Her youngest and Landon are the same age.
After doing my duty, I take my seat beside my wife. She grabs my hand and I stroke my thumb across her knuckles, like I have always done.
“Are you happy, Wife?”
“Always. Thank you for making my dreams come true.” As the pastor has Lauren and Christopher repeating their vows, the tears she has been on the verge of all day, finally spill over.
“Baby, it was all you. I love you so much.”
“I love you too. I can’t believe we get to do these six more times.”
“I don’t know if my wallet can handle that.” Landon is our only son. We are overrun by the women and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
“Yeah right.” She says, wiping her tears.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present for the first time, though it seems like it’s been forever: Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Thompson.”
We stand and applaud like everyone else. Lanie and Wyatt look to be in same state we are. I am surprised when Christopher takes the mic from the pastor.
“This day has been forever in the making. I have loved Lauren the entire time we have been alive, and I would never change that. We would like to thank our parents for showing us what true love is. We know how awful people can be when a couple looks like they don’t belong together. We have been the butt of jokes since middle school. Due to the example of our parents, I never felt the need to hide the fact that I love this woman more than life itself. The reward of her love is more than enough to keep me by her side, when others would tear us down or try to come between us. We are now ready to lead by the same example they taught us, as we announce baby Thompson. He or she is due in about five months.”
Wow. I knew something was off with her this morning. Wyatt looks at me and we share a nod. There is more applause. Lanie and Fancy are hugging and before I know it Stella and Avery are there too. This is what happens when they get together. The men stand off to the side talking about sports while they catch up. Over the years we have all gotten close, even taking adult only vacations together as well as family ones. You don’t know friendship until there are upwards of twenty people in a huge cabin.
At the reception, I do manage to pull my wife off to a quiet corner.
“Another baby to love. I wonder why love is so infinite.” I can tell she has been in the margaritas.
“It’s one of life’s mysteries.” I say.
I make out with my wife like a teenager. The next thirty or so years can go this way and I’d die a happy man.
THE END
